OMV Petrom and Renovatio Launch Three Solar Parks in Romania with 130 MW Capacity

Romanian energy company OMV Petrom and renewable energy developer Renovatio have commenced commercial operations at three photovoltaic parks with a combined installed capacity of approximately 130 MW, marking another milestone in Romania’s renewable energy expansion.

The solar facilities, located in Țăndărei, Bucovăț, and Căzănești, are now operational and supplying electricity to Romania’s national grid. Developed through a partnership between OMV Petrom and Renovatio, the projects represent a combined investment of approximately EUR 78 million.

OMV Petrom holds a 50% ownership interest in the three facilities, equivalent to approximately 65 MW of attributable installed capacity. The company acquired its stake in the projects from Renovatio in June 2024 as part of its strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio and strengthen its position in the regional electricity market.

Solar Projects to Supply Electricity Equivalent to 110,000 Households

The three photovoltaic parks are expected to generate approximately 0.2 terawatt-hours (TWh), or 200 gigawatt-hours (GWh), of electricity annually.

According to OMV Petrom, this production is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 110,000 Romanian households, highlighting the contribution of the new facilities to the country's electricity supply and renewable energy objectives.

The total investment of approximately EUR 78 million covers the development and grid connection of the three projects. Of this amount, approximately EUR 26 million was provided through grants under Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), supporting investments in cleaner energy infrastructure.

OMV Petrom Targets Over 2,500 MW of Renewable Capacity by 2030

The commissioning of the three solar parks increases the cumulative operational renewable energy capacity in OMV Petrom's portfolio, including partnerships, to approximately 200 MW.

The company is pursuing a broader expansion strategy, with an additional 1,200 MW of renewable energy capacity currently under construction and a target of exceeding 2,500 MW of operational capacity by 2030.

Franck Neel, Member of the Executive Board of OMV Petrom responsible for Gas & Power, described the commissioning as another step in the company's renewable energy development strategy.

"The commissioning of these solar parks is another step in advancing our renewable power portfolio," Neel said, emphasizing that the company's expanding renewable energy capacity will contribute to Romania's energy transition.

Partnership Expands into Wind Energy Development

Beyond solar energy, OMV Petrom and Renovatio are extending their cooperation into wind power generation.

In April, OMV Petrom and RNV Infrastructure, a subsidiary of Renovatio, entered the execution phase for three wind energy projects with a combined planned capacity of 305 MW.

The wind farms are located north and northeast of Bucharest and form part of the companies' efforts to diversify renewable electricity generation in Romania.

These developments reflect a broader strategy to establish a portfolio of solar and wind assets while supporting Romania's efforts to expand domestic renewable energy production.

Strengthening Romania's Energy Infrastructure

OMV Petrom's electricity portfolio also includes the 860 MW Brazi gas-fired power plant, alongside more than 2,500 MW of renewable energy projects, including partnerships, at various stages of implementation.

The company is also pursuing electricity storage projects in Romania and Bulgaria, reflecting the growing importance of energy storage in supporting renewable energy integration and electricity system flexibility.

The commissioning of the three new photovoltaic parks further strengthens OMV Petrom's role in Southeast Europe's evolving energy landscape, as Romania continues to attract investment in renewable power generation, grid infrastructure, and energy diversification.

With additional solar and wind projects progressing toward completion, OMV Petrom and Renovatio's partnership is expected to contribute to Romania's long-term renewable energy ambitions and the wider region's transition toward a more diversified electricity mix.
