Morocco’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Sustainable Development, Charafat Afailal, has called for accelerated implementation of energy and mining projects, stronger institutional coordination, and enhanced governance as the country advances its energy sovereignty and sustainable development priorities.
The minister chaired a series of meetings on Monday and Tuesday at the ministry’s headquarters in Rabat, bringing together senior officials and representatives from several key departments responsible for energy, mining, infrastructure, climate policy, and sustainable development.
The meetings focused on reviewing departmental responsibilities, assessing ongoing projects, evaluating implementation progress, and identifying future priorities across Morocco’s energy and environmental sectors.
Strengthening Morocco's Energy Sovereignty
During the discussions, Afailal emphasized the central role of the ministry’s departments in strengthening Morocco’s energy sovereignty and accelerating the country's energy transition.
She highlighted the importance of aligning energy policies with national development objectives while ensuring that climate considerations and sustainable development remain integral to public policymaking.
The discussions involved four departments:
Directorate of Fuels and Mining Industries, responsible for matters relating to hydrocarbons and mineral industries.
Directorate of Strategy and Sustainable Development, which contributes to long-term sector planning and sustainability priorities.
Directorate of Energy Transport, Storage and Distribution Networks, covering infrastructure essential to energy supply and distribution.
Directorate of Climate and Biodiversity, which addresses environmental protection and climate-related priorities.
The meetings provided an opportunity to review achievements, examine the status of existing initiatives, and discuss the future direction of departmental activities.
Accelerating Energy and Infrastructure Projects
Afailal called on ministry officials to build on existing achievements while increasing the pace of project execution and introducing new initiatives aligned with the government's programme.
Her remarks highlighted the importance of effective implementation and coordination across departments involved in Morocco's energy and mining sectors.
The minister also emphasized the need to strengthen regionalization, decentralization, and the delegation of administrative responsibilities, alongside improvements in institutional governance and transparency.
These priorities are intended to support more effective management of public projects and reinforce coordination between national and regional institutions.
Climate Action and Sustainable Development Remain Central
Alongside energy infrastructure and mining development, the minister reaffirmed the importance of integrating climate and sustainability considerations into government policies.
She stressed that the ministry's activities should remain consistent with Morocco's broader national priorities and royal directives, particularly those concerning energy transition, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
The discussions also addressed the need for clear strategic planning to guide future initiatives and ensure that projects contribute to long-term national objectives.
Regular Monitoring Meetings to Track Progress
To strengthen oversight and implementation, Afailal announced the introduction of periodic follow-up meetings to monitor progress across the ministry's various projects and initiatives.
The meetings will provide a framework for reviewing implementation, identifying challenges, and maintaining coordination between the departments involved.
The initiative reflects the ministry's emphasis on accountability, institutional efficiency, and continued progress in Morocco's energy and sustainable development agenda.
As Morocco continues to pursue greater energy sovereignty and a diversified energy system, effective project delivery and institutional coordination will remain important to achieving the country's long-term energy and environmental objectives.
