Shell will supply approximately 600 million cubic meters of LNG annually from 2027, strengthening METLEN’s supply portfolio for Greece and other European markets.
METLEN Energy & Metals has signed a binding five-year liquefied natural gas supply agreement with Shell Global LNG Limited, securing additional volumes as the company expands its role in Southeast Europe’s energy markets.
Announced on November 2, the agreement provides for six LNG cargoes annually from 2027, equivalent to approximately 0.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The cargoes will primarily originate from Shell’s US LNG portfolio and will serve Greece or other European gas markets.
The companies did not disclose the agreement’s financial terms.
From preliminary framework to binding supply
The deal builds on a memorandum of understanding signed in February 2026, which established a framework for cooperation in LNG supply and trading.
That initial framework envisaged annual volumes of between 500 million and 1 billion cubic meters from 2027 to 2031, with deliveries to Greece’s Revithoussa and Alexandroupolis LNG regasification facilities. The binding agreement now establishes a five-year supply commitment within that previously outlined range.
For METLEN, the arrangement adds a long-term source of gas while broadening its sourcing options and flexibility to supply customers across European markets.
Panayotis Kanellopoulos, METLEN’s Chief Executive Director of International Energy Supply & Trading, said the partnership combines Shell’s global LNG capabilities with METLEN’s regional presence, supporting the company’s efforts to diversify energy sourcing and strengthen its European market position.
Greece’s regional energy role
The agreement also highlights Greece’s role as an entry point for LNG destined for domestic consumption and neighboring markets.
METLEN identified the Vertical Gas Corridor as a route for accessing European markets, linking the supply agreement to wider efforts to move gas through the region. However, the announcement does not allocate specific volumes to individual destination countries.
Combining Shell’s LNG portfolio, shipping capabilities and trading expertise with METLEN’s established Southeast European operations could give the companies greater flexibility in responding to regional demand.
The agreement’s scope allows deliveries to serve Greece or other European gas markets, giving METLEN options over where the contracted supply is ultimately marketed.
Diversifying European gas supply
The reliance primarily on Shell’s US LNG portfolio adds a transatlantic supply component to METLEN’s longer-term procurement strategy.
For buyers, long-term supply arrangements can improve visibility over contracted volumes while supporting commercial planning. The announcement does not disclose pricing formulas, individual cargo sizes or detailed delivery schedules.
Tom Summers, Shell’s Executive Vice President for LNG Marketing and Trading, emphasized LNG’s role in providing flexible and reliable energy to customers in Greece and other European countries. He also indicated that Shell sees opportunities to expand its cooperation with METLEN.
With deliveries beginning in 2027, the agreement establishes a concrete supply commitment behind the companies’ earlier framework and strengthens METLEN’s ability to serve gas customers across Greece and the wider European market.
